Tina Turner, the eternal Queen of Rock and Roll

Today, on November 26th, Anna Mae Bullock, or simply Tina Turner, would be turning 84 years old.

Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville on November 26, 1939. Widely referred to as the ‘Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll,’ she rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before embarking on a successful solo career.

In 1988, she made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the show with the largest paying audience ever by a solo singer. The artist gathered 182,000 people at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro to witness her performance, which was broadcast worldwide.

Having sold over 100 million records worldwide and being the first — and so far only — person to have at least one hit in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart in seven consecutive decades (1960s to 2020s), Tina Turner is one of the best-selling artists of all time. She received twelve Grammy Awards, including eight competitive awards, three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She was the first black artist and the first woman to grace the cover of Rolling Stone, which ranked her among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. With stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame, Tina was twice nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Tina Turner passed away on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83 in Switzerland, where she had been living since 1995.
